Zscaler ThreatLabz analyzed telemetry from Oct 2021–Sep 2022 and found that encrypted channels carried the majority of cyberattacks (over 85%), with nearly 90% of those encrypted threats involving malware (notable families include ChromeLoader, Gamaredon, SolarMarker, AdLoad, and Manuscrypt); the report documents 24 billion encrypted threats blocked in 2022, significant country- and industry-targeting trends (US, India, South Africa; manufacturing, education, healthcare), a sharp increase in ransomware, and recommends cloud-native TLS inspection and zero trust controls to detect and stop encrypted attacks.
