Popular school apps may be sharing student data with advertisers

A Utah State Board of Education-led two-year study of 100 EdTech apps used in schools analyzed live network traffic and found widespread collection and sharing of student data inconsistent with vendor privacy agreements — 52% of apps with relevant agreements collected unauthorized student elements, 61% shared data with third parties, and 36% transmitted data to advertisers; vendors were asked to remediate and Utah passed H.B.55 to strengthen contractual and compliance requirements for education technology providers.
