Americans urged to use encrypted messaging after large, ongoing cyberattack

A reported years-long campaign by a China-linked APT known as Salt Typhoon breached infrastructure at eight major telecom firms (including AT&T and Verizon), exfiltrating large amounts of communications metadata on Americans; CISA and the FBI are investigating ongoing access and urge use of end-to-end encrypted messaging, timely OS updates, and phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication.
