California just put people back in control of their data

California’s 2025 session produced several notable privacy laws: AB 656 requires social platforms to make account cancellation straightforward and ensure full deletion of user data (likely effective Jan 1, 2026); AB 566 (“Opt Me Out Act”) mandates that browsers support user-configurable opt-out preference signals by Jan 1, 2027; and SB 361 strengthens data broker transparency under the CPPA, requiring detailed disclosures on sensitive data handling and whether data was shared or sold to foreign actors, government entities, law enforcement, or generative AI developers.
