Drug cartel hacked cameras and phones to spy on FBI and identify witnesses

A June 2025 DOJ Inspector General report details how the Sinaloa cartel contracted a hacker to exploit mobile phones and Mexico City camera systems to intercept calls, collect geolocation and surveillance data on FBI personnel (including an Assistant Legal Attaché), and how that intelligence was used to identify, intimidate, or kill potential witnesses; the report warns that the FBI's current defenses and strategic planning against so-called "ubiquitous technical surveillance" are inconsistent, incomplete, and lack clear lines of authority.
