Texas scrutinizes four more car manufacturers on privacy issues

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton expanded an investigation into automakers’ data practices, issuing notices to Ford, Hyundai, Toyota, and Fiat Chrysler seeking details on collection methods, third-party sharing, consent, and customer impact, following earlier actions including civil investigative demands to additional carmakers and a lawsuit against GM for selling driving data. The AG also targeted data buyers such as Allstate’s Arity and warned several mobile apps for alleged privacy law violations. In a January 28, 2025 update, Ford stated it does not sell connected vehicle data to brokers, phased out support for usage-based insurance products, and never shared connected vehicle data with LexisNexis or Verisk.
