The City of Columbus was targeted by the Rhysida ransomware group on July 18, 2024; although systems were not encrypted, Rhysida exfiltrated and later published roughly 260,000 files (~3.1 TB) containing unencrypted personal information of employees and residents. A security researcher downloaded and disclosed findings to the media, prompting the city to sue and obtain a temporary restraining order to prohibit further dissemination of the stolen data.
