California Hits General Motors With Record $12.75 Million CCPA Privacy Settlement

California Attorney General Rob Bonta and a coalition of state and local prosecutors announced a $12.75 million settlement with General Motors after alleging that GM collected, retained, and sold precise location and driving-behavior data of California drivers via OnStar to data brokers (Verisk Analytics and LexisNexis) without proper consent, violating the CCPA; the settlement includes penalties, a five-year prohibition on selling driving data to consumer reporting agencies, data-deletion requirements, and mandatory privacy compliance and reporting measures.
