Security engineer jailed for 3 years for $12M crypto hacks

Shakeeb Ahmed, a former security engineer, was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to hacking two cryptocurrency exchanges (Crema Finance and Nirvana Finance) in 2022 and stealing roughly $12.6M in crypto ($9M and $3.6M); Nirvana Finance lost nearly all funds and subsequently shut down. Ahmed attempted to return funds in exchange for a $1.5M fee, was apprehended, and was ordered to forfeit $12.4M, pay restitution exceeding $5M, and serve three years of supervised release.
