Chinese EV makers, and their connected vehicles, targeted by new House bill

A U.S. House bill introduced by Rep. Elissa Slotkin, the Connected Vehicle National Security Review Act, would authorize the Department of Commerce to review and potentially block connected and autonomous vehicles linked to China due to national security and data-collection risks. Building on recent defense provisions (e.g., bans at U.S. military bases and restrictions on DoD lidar procurement), the measure could apply to vehicles produced by Chinese firms in third countries (such as Mexico) and affect companies like BYD, WeRide, Pony.ai, Volvo, and Polestar; a separate Commerce ruling on Chinese connected vehicles is expected later this year.
