FCC bans import of new consumer routers made overseas, citing security risks

The FCC has ordered a ban on the import of new consumer routers manufactured overseas, citing cybersecurity risks after repeated exploitation of router vulnerabilities by China-backed groups (Salt/Salt Typhoon, Flax Typhoon) that have run large botnets, conducted DDoS attacks, and enabled surveillance; the agency said exemptions could be granted by DoD or DHS, but did not present direct evidence that U.S.-made routers are more secure.
