TechCrunch reports that Protei, a telecom vendor that develops DPI/SORM surveillance and web-filtering equipment, was hacked and its website defaced on November 8; the attacker exfiltrated approximately 182 GB of files (including years of emails) from the company’s web server, and a copy of the data was provided to DDoSecrets. The actor and motive remain unknown, but the defacement referenced DPI/SORM systems and the breach raises concerns given Protei’s sales of lawful-intercept and censorship technologies across multiple countries.
