California residents can use new tool to demand brokers delete their personal data

California launched the Delete Requests and Opt-Out Platform (DROP) under the 2023 Delete Act, allowing residents to submit a single request for all registered data brokers to delete their personal information; processing starts in August 2026 with a 90-day completion window, first-party data and certain public or HIPAA-covered records are exempt, and noncompliant brokers face $200/day penalties, with anticipated benefits including fewer unwanted communications and reduced risks of identity theft, fraud, and AI impersonation.
