Penn State researchers disclosed 12 vulnerabilities in 5G basebands from Samsung, MediaTek, and Qualcomm that allowed phones to be tricked into connecting to fake base stations and be silently exploited — enabling phishing, credential theft via malicious sites, and protocol downgrade to facilitate eavesdropping. The team released a tool (5GBaseChecker) to aid further research and reported that most affected vendors have issued patches.
