Google expands passkey support to its Advanced Protection Program ahead of the US presidential election

Google announced passkey support for its Advanced Protection Program to better secure high-risk users ahead of the U.S. election, allowing enrollment with passkeys alone or alongside passwords or hardware keys. The company notes passkeys have authenticated users over 1 billion times across 400 million accounts and are used more than legacy 2SV methods, with broad industry adoption (e.g., Apple, Amazon, GitHub). Google is also expanding Cross-Account Protection, sharing security alerts with connected third-party apps, now covering 2.4 billion accounts across 3.4 million apps and sites.
