DOJ charges 17 Iranians in cybertheft campaign

### Executive summary U.S. prosecutors charged 17 individuals linked to Iran’s Mabna Institute for a widespread hacking-for-hire campaign since ~2013 that targeted 144 U.S. universities, 178 foreign universities, dozens of companies and several government agencies, compromising about 8,000 professor accounts and exfiltrating at least 31.5 TB of academic data which was later sold to customers in Iran; charges allege operations supported Iran’s IRGC and included phishing, credential trading, and targeted intrusions.
