Microsoft, OpenAI Warn of Nation-State Hackers Weaponizing AI for Cyber Attacks

Microsoft and OpenAI reported that nation-state actors linked to Russia, North Korea, Iran, and China are experimenting with AI and large language models to augment cyber operations—using models for open-source reconnaissance, coding assistance, crafting phishing content, and researching evasion techniques. Microsoft disrupted activities from five state-affiliated actors and is developing principles and guardrails to mitigate malicious use of AI by APTs and cybercriminals.
