Deep Dive on Supplement Scams: How AI Drives ‘Miracle Cures’ and Sponsored Health-Related Scams on Social Media

Bitdefender Labs reports a surge (Mar–May 2024) in health-related scam campaigns on Meta platforms using AI-generated deepfake videos and tailored ads to impersonate celebrities and doctors, reaching audiences across many countries and languages. The campaigns span thousands of pages and tens of thousands of ads, using cloned news sites, fabricated testimonials, urgency tactics, and phone-based ordering with aggressive upselling to extract victims’ money and personal data. The report highlights common red flags, targeted conditions (e.g., diabetes, joint pain, anti-aging), and provides practical guidance to identify and avoid these scams.
