Microsoft’s May 2025 Windows 11 security update (KB5058405) has caused enterprise virtualized systems—including Azure VMs, Azure Virtual Desktop, Citrix and Hyper-V deployments—to enter recovery mode with error 0xc0000098 due to missing or corrupted ACPI.sys, disrupting boot processes. Microsoft recommends pausing deployments in affected configurations, using Azure VM repair or snapshot rollback for remediation, and expects a hotfix (KB5058405_rev1) by early June 2025; registry workarounds exist but are not advised for production.
