Google Uses Rust in Pixel 10 Modem Firmware to Eliminate Memory-Safety Bugs

Google has integrated Rust into the Pixel 10 cellular baseband firmware by replacing the modem's DNS parser with a Rust-based, no_std adaptation of the hickory-proto crate. The change aims to eliminate memory-safety issues (e.g., buffer overflows) that have enabled Project Zero RCE demos and a referenced CVE, linking Rust’s allocator via FFI, extending crash reporting, and accepting a ~371 KB firmware size increase as a tradeoff while planning further Rust migrations.
