Detection Is Fast. Understanding Is Not. Why File-Access Incidents Stall - and How Impact Clarity Changes the Outcome

The report argues that although organizations have become faster at detecting and containing security incidents, they lag in quickly understanding the data-centric impact of those events, which drives cost and uncertainty. It highlights that behavioral access alerts alone cannot determine risk because identical access patterns can represent very different exposures depending on data meaning, ownership, and regulatory obligations. To close this gap, it recommends combining data awareness, full coverage across all data locations, and data lineage over time to translate access into actionable impact, reduce overscoping, and improve decision-making under time pressure, supported by findings from Mandiant, IBM, Unit 42, and Arctic Wolf.
