We Hunted Hidden Police Signals at the DNC

WIRED conducted a wireless survey around the DNC using EFF-developed cell-site simulator detection tools, capturing Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and cellular beacons from hundreds of thousands of devices. While no cell-site simulators were confirmed, repeated identifiers from police body cameras, drones, and consumer devices exposed movement patterns and demonstrated how pervasive device signals enable real-time tracking of both law enforcement and protesters, underscoring significant privacy risks in high-profile events.
