Secret Phone Surveillance Tech Was Likely Deployed at 2024 DNC

WIRED, working with the EFF, conducted a wireless survey during the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago and observed anomalies consistent with a cell-site simulator (“stingray”) in use; using two rooted Android phones, hotspots, and EFF’s Rayhunter tool, reporters monitored signals around protests and venues, raising concerns that the device could have indiscriminately intercepted call metadata, location data, and app traffic amid a heavy law enforcement presence and prompting questions about authorization and oversight.
