DHS Has Been Collecting US Citizens’ DNA for Years

A report based on newly released government data alleges that DHS components, including CBP and ICE, have collected DNA from nearly 2,000 U.S. citizens—some minors—and submitted profiles to the FBI’s CODIS database despite lacking clear statutory authorization, sometimes citing civil penalties or leaving charge fields blank. The analysis by Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy & Technology suggests the program extends far beyond criminal investigations, sweeping in travelers and children, and potentially subjecting affected individuals to lifelong law-enforcement scrutiny. DHS did not comment on the findings.
