Audit: FBI is Losing Track of Storage Devices Holding Sensitive Data

A DOJ OIG audit found the FBI’s Asset Management Unit mishandled electronic storage media destined for destruction, including failing to label classification levels, track loose drives, and adequately secure storage areas; widespread facility access and nonfunctional/insufficient camera coverage compounded risks of loss or theft of NSI/SBU data. The report recommends revised procedures for accounting, timely sanitization and destruction, proper classification marking, and strengthened facility security controls.
