An Analysis of AI usage in Federal Agencies

This report surveys AI/ML initiatives across U.S. government agencies, finding widespread adoption with Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision most prevalent, limited current use of generative AI, and maturity stages ranging from POC to in-use (with DOC and NASA skewing toward live deployments). It outlines key use cases across DHS, HHS (CDC, FDA, NIH), VA, USDA, DOT, EPA, Treasury, NARA, and GSA; notes sparse public source-code links despite OMB M-24-10’s open-source expectations; and highlights FedRAMP considerations for cloud-based tools and services. Overall, it concludes that AI/ML is deeply embedded in government operations and poised for further growth.
