Researchers (LayerX and others) found extensive networks of browser extensions and ad blockers that collect and openly sell viewing history, demographic data, and corporate browsing activity across hundreds of thousands to millions of users; this unregulated data collection creates significant privacy exposure and a risk of corporate data leakage that can be used for targeted attacks. The report warns that AI-native browsers amplify these risks, and recommends organizations inventory extension usage, review publisher data rights and privacy policies, enforce extension governance, and apply mitigations such as MFA, DNS filtering, and defense-in-depth.
