Survey Sees Little Post-Quantum Computing Encryption Progress

A Ponemon Institute survey of 4,149 IT and security practitioners (on behalf of Entrust) reports that 75% expect quantum computers to break traditional public-key encryption within five years, yet only 38% are preparing for post-quantum cryptography and 32% are inventorying cryptographic assets; 68% struggle to manage keys/certificates/secrets and 41% cite limited visibility as the top barrier. Entrust’s Greg Wetmore warns organizations may have less than ~800 working days to migrate if Q‑Day arrives by 2029, amid “harvest-now, decrypt-later” risks; despite NIST/Google warnings, budgets often prioritize AI, though some teams bundle encryption upgrades into AI or zero-trust initiatives.
